The Southern Appalachian Work Center (SAWC) is a fully equipped and completely mobile trail work and hiking organization that is dedicated to providing support to trail maintaining organizations the entire length of the Appalachian Trail.  Additionally, the Southern Appalachian Work Center also maintains the Gentry Creek Falls Trail in Cherokee National Forest.  SAWC and the One Percent Club also award annual grants to Trail Clubs, AT Service Providers, and Long Distance Hikers based on need and mission statement.  Contact me at jim.chambers@onepercentclub.us for more information on grant opportunities.

The One Percent Club is a private and invitation only association based on one's contributions to the Appalachian Trail and the long distance hiking community.  A 1%'er on the Appalachian Trail is one of those extremely rare trail maintainers, long distance hikers, and service providers who have dedicated their lives to giving back to the AT, and it's hikers.  Further, there are 31 Trail Maintenance Clubs along the Appalachian Trail that are dedicated to the trail's long term health, plus there are other organizations who's statement of purpose mandates the preservation and protection of the long distance hiking experience; however those Trail Clubs and Organizations are governed and maintained by just 1% of their membership.....and the One Percent Club has been formed to recognize and support those individuals.

The One Percent Club and the Southern Appalachian Work Center are private, completely self-supported, and unaffiliated associations that are dedicated to promoting volunteerism on the Appalachian Trail and the engagement of future outdoor volunteers.  The One Percent Club will further recognize those 1%'ers who have dedicated their lives to the long term sustainability of the Appalachian Trail and the long distance hiking experience.

Engaging the next generation of trail stewards and volunteers on the Appalachian Trail requires significant changes in the way trail clubs and organizations expose potential volunteers to the Appalachian Trail and other outdoor volunteer opportunities.  Social Medial has quickly become a crucial element in establishing the next generation of outdoor volunteers.
